Good morning, family! I’m so glad you chose to be with us today! I’m going to call today “Fun Day Sunday” because today we’re going to take a well-known story and apply some inner being-ness to it. It’s going to be so much fun!!!
Charles Fillmore, Co-Founder of Unity said,” Life is an ever-progressive upward spiral of conscious evolution.” This emphasizes our spiritual growth is continuously and constantly flowing. Whether we are aware of it or not. Keep that thought in mind as we progress. It also hangs as a reminder here in the sanctuary, in case you need a visual.
Today we explore a story many of us know by heart, Oh, wait, I need a couple items…..Grinch hat, Grinch tree topper…….
I would like to introduce you to the story of the, you guessed it, the Grinch—but through the lens of Unity metaphysics, where characters become a symbol of consciousness, and every moment becomes a doorway into spiritual awakening. A pathway to understanding our spiritual power of Life. That expression of Being, which according to the Revealing Word, which manifests as animation, activity, and vigor. I believe it’s safe to say, Grinch had all the above, however misdirected.
Most of us, if not all of us have read the book, or watched the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Suess Geisel)
This is not just a Christmas tale.
It is a parable of transformation, a reminder that the Christ Presence lives within every being, even when it seems hidden behind walls of fear, resentment, or old wounds.
And at the center of this story is the Spiritual Power of Life, the divine energy that is always seeking to express more fully through us.
Our main character of course, is the Grinch. A Symbol of Forgetfulness in us.
In Unity, we teach, and know, according to the 5 Unity Principles,
The 2nd Principle. “Humans are spiritual beings with a spark of divinity within them.”
But we also know what it feels like to forget that truth.
The Grinch represents that part of us that has become contracted, defended, or cut off from joy.
Not because we are bad, but because we have forgotten who we are.
His “small heart” is not a defect.
It is a metaphysical symbol of consciousness constricted by fear.
We all have Grinch moments—times when we feel separate, alone, or disconnected from the flow of Life.
But here’s an absolute:
The Christ Presence within us never shrinks.
Only our awareness of it does.
Then we have the Whovians of Whoville: The Still Small Voice of God
When the Grinch steals Christmas, the Whovians do something extraordinary.
They do not resist.
They do not collapse.
They do not curse the darkness.
They sing.
Their song is the metaphysical equivalent of the still small voice, the gentle, persistent whisper of Spirit that says:
“You are loved.
You belong.
Nothing real can be taken from you.”
The Whovians represent the divine presence within us that remains steady, loving, and unshaken by outer appearances.
They are the part of us that knows the Truth even when our personality self, our ego, forgets.
Now, we have the moment of awakening: When Grinch’s heart expands
The turning point in the story is not when the Grinch sees the Whovians.
It is when he hears them.
He becomes still enough to listen.
This is the moment every spiritual seeker knows. The moment when the noise of fear quiets just enough for the Life Force of the One Presence and One Power to be felt.
In Unity metaphysics, this is the quickening of Life. The divine energy stirring within us, expanding our awareness, awakening our hearts.
The Grinch’s heart grows not because the Whovians changed him, but because he came to realize the Truth! Change comes from within. His heart grew 3 sizes bigger! Metaphysically, every level of his being grew. Spirit, soul and body.
Transformation is never imposed from the outside.
It is always an inside job.
How then does this connect with the Spiritual Power of Life?
It’s The Pulse of Divine Renewal
The Power of Life is the thread running through the entire story.
Life called the Grinch to listen; even when he wants to shut out the world.
Life called the Whovians to sing; the still small voice, the gentle, persistent whisper of Spirit.
Life expanded the heart, breaking open the shell of separation.
Life restored connection, bringing the Grinch to the feast.
Life expressed as joy, as community, as celebration.
Life is always seeking to express more fully through us.
Even when we resist, Life persists.
The Grinch didn’t “find” Life.
He remembered the true meaning, because it was already within him.
Let’s acknowledge our Christ Presence, Our True Identity
Understand, Grinch’s transformation is not about becoming someone new.
It is about remembering who he already was.
This is the essence of the Christ Presence within us.
- It is the divine pattern of perfection within us.
- It is the truth of our being.
- It is the Love that cannot be diminished.
- It is the Life that cannot be taken.
- It is the Light that cannot be extinguished.
When the Grinch returns the gifts, he is not “making up” for anything.
He is aligning with his true nature, the nature of Love, generosity, and connection.
He becomes a living expression of the Christ idea:
Love in action.
Finally, we have The Feast: Returning to the Table of Life
The story ends with the Grinch at the table, carving the roast beast.
This is a powerful symbol.
The table represents oneness, community, and the shared feast of Life.
When we awaken to the Christ Presence within us, we naturally return to the table—
to connection,
to belonging,
to joy,
to the celebration of Life.
We discover that we were never separate.
We simply forgot.
The Grinch story is not just a holiday tale.
It is a metaphysical map of awakening.
The Whovians remind us that the still small voice of God is always singing.
The Grinch reminds us that no heart is too small to grow.
And the Christ Presence reminds us that Life is always calling us into greater love, greater joy, and greater wholeness.
May your heart grow three sizes today.
And may you hear the song of Spirit calling you to remember.
The Christ Presence within us is alive, expanding, and expressing as Love.
Our hearts grow with every breath.
We listen to the still small voice of God,
and we return to the feast of Life.”
So it is and so we agree to be.
Meditation
I invite you to take a slow, easy breath…
and let your body soften into this moment.
Allow your shoulders to drop.
Let your jaw relax.
Let your breath become your anchor.
As you breathe, imagine yourself entering the quiet inner space of your own heart.
A peaceful stillness surrounds you.
In that stillness, you hear a soft, steady song
the still small voice of God,
gentle as the Whovians of Whoville,
reminding you:
You are loved.
You are whole.
You are never separate from the divine source,
The infinite love of Omnipotent Source, God,
Let that truth settle into your heart.
If there is any part of you that feels tight or small today,
offer it compassion.
Offer it warmth.
Let your heart gently expand,
making room for the Christ Presence already alive within you.
Let’s take a moment in the silence to feel the Truth of our being.
Feel your heart growing more…..
open, warm, spacious,
as divine Life flows through you.
Take one more deep breath,
carrying this warmth with you.
And when you’re ready,
gently open your eyes,
bringing our Power of Life into this moment.
Blessings on the Path,
Rev. Deb & Su
